AI in the business

Why I Use AI in my Business (And How it Keeps me from Talking to Myself… Mostly)

I’ve sat down a few times to write this post, ironically using AI as the basis for content, only to feel like it was missing the mark, and deleted it. So today I’m going to do something that I rarely do anymore… write 100% of the content.

AI gets a bad name, and for good reason. I had a big section about AI being a tool, and how tools are neither good nor bad… It sounded a little too preachy, so I’m going to just skip ahead to the reason I wanted to write this post in the first place.

Why I use AI in my Business

  1. It’s fast. Oh, is it ever fast. The amount of work that I can get done using AI is unbelievable. It can immediately spit a well-formed article in seconds. I used it yesterday to create a Standard Operating Procedure for onboarding new clients, and it was done in less than a minute.
  2. It’s accurate-ish. AI is getting better with every new version. It does still “hallucinate” at times, meaning that it just plain makes stuff up. That can be dangerous if you don’t fact check its work. I asked it to recommend a business bank account for me, and the #1 recommendation was Tangerine’s business chequing account, which sounded great… except that Tangerine doesn’t offer a business chequing account, and never has.
  3. It thinks of things that I would never think of. AI doesn’t simply spit out answers. It interacts with me. It will over-deliver information, bringing up things that had never crossed my mind, and even ask me questions. Its knowledge base might not be technically unlimited, but it sure feels like it.
  4. It’s not going anywhere. Like it or not, AI is here to stay. I can either choose to ignore it, or I can choose to embrace it. Either way, it has already fundamentally changed the way businesses operate. I’ve heard it mentioned that we are essentially now in the same era as when the Internet first started to gain popularity.

What is The Future of AI?

I wish that I knew. For every ChatGPT that you have heard of, there are a hundred more AI programs that you haven’t. The AI landscape is changing so quickly that it feels like the wild west out there.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t pretend that it’s all sunshine and lollipops. There are a lot of questions surrounding AI, and there’s no doubt that it already creates challenges. But at least for my business the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

And let’s be honest. Who wouldn’t want a co-worker who’s quiet, won’t steal your lunch from the fridge and doesn’t file a complaint with HR when you show up at your desk without pants for the fifth time this week?
